How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera: A Photographer’s Best Tips

Want to know how to feel comfortable in front of the camera? As a Minnesota wedding photographer, I have years of experience helping my clients get confident and relaxed while being captured. And I want to share a few tips and tricks from those years!

The first thing I want you to know is that almost EVERYONE has the same fears & hesitations you’re feeling. I can’t count the number of times people have said to me, “We’re just awkward on camera.” I can 100% promise you: you’re not!

Plus, “awkward” looks good on camera! So even if you think you aren’t naturally gifted for photos, please trust that you don’t have to feel that way in order to have amazing photographs.

Another common barrier I see to how to feel comfortable in front of the camera is not being sure how to move!

What to do with your hands! What’s my face look like? Is this a flattering angle? Is my hair in my face?

All very normal things to run through your mind when someone is pointing a camera at you and taking photos. That’s what I’m here for! I walk you through all the poses and prompts. I will show you exactly what I want the movement to be like and tell you when it’s looking good so you can build confidence. My goal is to have you feeling relaxed, trusting the process. That’s when the magic will happen!

But it’s not your job to magically feel that way. I will guide you through the experience so that you can let your guard down and… dare I say… enjoy your photo session! 😉

Some of the easy tricks I tell my clients to instantly feel more relaxed are to focus on movement. Even the smallest sways or gentle caresses can help translate to emotion in photos. And speaking of emotion – focusing on your partner will go a long way in your images. Just showing sinking into that love you feel will translate. It’s my job to find that perfect expression or movement to click the shutter. That’s what I am trained for and have been doing for years!

Wanna know how to feel comfortable in front of the camera – but from my client’s perspective? Here are a few reviews!

Samantha was hands down my favorite wedding vendor. You can tell she truly cares about not only her work, but her clients, on a deep level. As someone who feels awkward in front of the camera, she made me feel absolutely comfortable – I’d go so far as to say I actually enjoyed my time in front of the camera!

We were a little worried we’d be awkward in photos but taking pics with Samantha was so easy and she made posing for pictures so simple and super fun! We absolutely adore our photos and we get so many compliments from our friends and family on how amazing they all turned out!

So whether we’re shooting your engagement sessions in a field, or your family portraits in a church – I hope this helps you feel confident and relaxed heading into your session!
