There’s something really special about a spring wedding in Minnesota, when the air is still juuust a little chilly, but there’s a softness and promise in the light. Kara and James tied the knot at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Community in Wayzata, surrounded by family, friends, and a whole lot of love.
Their story is one of those slow-burn, deeply rooted romances. I was so excited to hear when we hopped on our initial call. They had been together for over five years before their wedding day, and one of the sweetest details? The bride’s grandparents gave their seal of approval before she ever even met him. Talk about a sign.
The day began with a sweet set of first looks with her father and with her soon-to-be husband.
And yes, their sweet pup Blu made a cameo! Their pup is so important to them! Kara even had a hand-embroidered handkerchief stitched with his little portrait that read, “something Blu.” It was such a personal and creative touch, and it honestly melted everyone’s heart.
She wore a fitted dress with a square neckline and an elegant train — classic with just the right amount of modern flair. Her blonde hair was swept into a soft, pinned-down style that paired perfectly with the clean lines of her dress and the overall black-and-white aesthetic of the day. It was the kind of look that’s going to age beautifully in photos for decades to come.
Before the ceremony began, the couple shared some quiet time for portraits, a peaceful pause in the excitement of the day. And once the formalities were over, they leaned fully into celebration mode.
The reception at the Plymouth Community Center was the perfect mix of elegant and fun. Think: an ice cream bar (yes, please), music, and a dance floor that was not shy. There was so much joy in that room!! It was the kind of party where every guest was all-in, and you could feel it in every toast, every laugh, every dance move.
Right before the sun dipped, the couple snuck out for some golden hour portraits, just the two of them.
As a Minnesota wedding photographer, this is often one of my favorite moments of a wedding day. That warm light, the calm after the party, the quiet happiness in their faces… it was magical. Truly, the best way to wrap up a day that was so thoughtfully and authentically them.
