Why You Should Consider An In-Home Newborn Session

There is something so special about an in-home newborn session. Your baby is brandddd new. They’re in that sleepy, angelic phase. You are all learning a new rhythm together. And your home is the backdrop to all these new first memories unfolding.

That is exactly why I love photographing newborn sessions at home.

There is no packing up the diaper bag. No rushing out the door. No wondering if you forgot something important. You get to stay in the place where you feel most comfortable, and as a Minnesota family photographer, I think it shows up in the images. When you are home, you can settle in, snuggle up, and simply be together.

Your Home Tells the Story

The nursery you spent months putting together. You carefully picked the furniture and decor; your own Pinterest board come to life.

The couch where you rock your baby at 2 a.m.

The family dog who refuses to leave your side.

Those little details matter.

An in-home session tells the story of this season in a really unique way.

And years from now, you will look back and remember more than just what your baby looked like.

You will remember what life felt like because these images will transport you right back into this season of life.

I love capturing the tiny moments that make your family yours.

A sibling peeking into the crib. Tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The way your baby fits perfectly in your arms.

As a fellow mom, I know how fast the newborn stage goes. I know there are days that feel like an eternity, and I also know you blink and your little one is learning to read or riding a bike.

This season is quick. You’re sleep deprived. And these memories will be captured so tangibly in the photographs, for all the years to come.

One of the biggest hesitations I hear about in-home newborn sessions? The house.

Let me be the first to tell you: please do not stress about the house

I need you to hear this loud and clear. Your house does not need to be perfect.

I have three kids. I completely understand how quickly life can feel messy, especially with a brand new baby at home.

I am never judging. Ever.

All I need is a small bit of space with some beautiful window light. We can move a basket, straighten a blanket, or shift to another room if we need to. That is it.

I want you to feel no stress about this at all!

Before I arrive, here are the only things I recommend are from a photography perspective:

  • Open the blinds or curtains in the rooms with the best light
  • Tidy one or two spaces if it helps you feel more relaxed
  • Dress in something comfortable and neutral that doesn’t clash with your wall color
  • Have a swaddle or favorite blanket nearby

The best sessions are the ones where nobody feels rushed.

We keep things low-key and snuggly. Taking breaks when baby needs to eat. We pause for diaper changes. We let older siblings run around for a minute if they need to.

There is no pressure to perform or smile perfectly at the camera.

Instead, I will gently guide you into moments that feel natural and easy. The result is a gallery full of connection, comfort, and real life.

Alternatively, if driving to a studio where you can just escape the normal and solely focus on your babe sounds like your dream come true: I do offer newborn sessions in my studio as well.

The space is set up for you with clean white walls, and comfy wraps and props for your little one. Sometimes leaving it all behind is the easier option.

The good news is, there is no right answer. If you want to have a cozy in-home newborn session or slip away to the studio to enjoy the moment in a little bubble: they’re both available to you.
