Engagement Session Prop Ideas

Okay, so you’re getting married and have found the photographer of your dreams. Now what? Well, you’ll need to book all the other important vendors. And in order to celebrate booking all those other vendors, you’ll want to schedule your engagement session! That’s what makes it really real. You’ll need to pick your outfits, and then you’ll need to decide the vibe of your session. That vibe will tell you exactly how to make your photos unique. It’ll also help you brainstorm engagement session prop ideas without feeling too forced.

Here’s a couple of vibes you can use to brainstorm as well!

Your session vibe is based on your personality, so this should be a fairly easy thing, but in case you need some options, these will pair perfectly with the prop ideas I’ve written below:

  • Outdoorsy vibes: Perfect if you two like doing outdoor activities like camping or hiking
  • Librarian vibes: If you are big readers (or are literally a librarian) there’s a lot of opportunity here
  • Homebody vibes: You don’t have to be the kind of people who travel or do a lot of activities outside your house, you can take chill photos at home!

Advice for using your props

When thinking about props, you don’t need to be extravagant or too out of the box, it can look cheesy in the photos. Make sure they make sense for your theme. You don’t want to bring a ton of books to a bar session.

Bring session props from your day-to-day life. You’ll want this to just feel like real life. If you don’t play a guitar but hold one in all your shots then you’ll look (and feel) inauthentic. It will also be harder for you to relax and find photos you love if you don’t feel connected to them.

Here’s some of my favorite engagement session prop ideas

  • Picnic at the park
  • Going to your favorite happy hour
  • Bringing your dog
  • Playing the guitar
  • Fave pair of shoes
  • Go to your favorite book store
  • Bouquet of flowers from local shop etc.
  • Pose with your car
  • Pop some bottles of champagne
  • Go on a boat ride
  • Wear some fun hats
  • Watercolors
  • In-home session baking cookies in the kitchen or dancing in the living room with candles etc.
