Coordinating Engagement Session Outfits

One of the questions I get the most as an engagement photographer is “how are we supposed to dress?” And I completely understand it! I don’t expect you to be the expert, and that’s exactly what I’m here for. I’m super excited to share with you my favorite tricks for coordinating outfits for your engagement session. I’ve even got a bunch of example photos, so feel free to “steal their looks”! In fact, I encourage it.

If you read this post and want some more inspiration, here’s a city inspired engagement session & here’s one that’s more nature inspired.

Bring two looks!

I suggest bringing two looks so that your engagement session can have a little variety. You should bring one that’s a bit more casual, and then one that leans more formal. This way you have photos for save-the-dates, a profile picture change, or just one to post on your anniversary while you gush about your super cute fiance. Check out this post with more examples of casual vs. formal!

For the men:

Consider wearing something like a henley, khakis, a button up, jeans, and grab some neutral colors. Trust me, it’ll be way easier to coordinate that way.

For the ladies:

Flowy dresses, jeans, your favorite t-shirt, and whatever else makes you feel good! You want to look and feel natural during your session, and adjusting your clothes because you don’t feel great won’t help that feeling.

Think about the weather and the location when you’re picking outfits.

A cozy sweater look looks perfect during the fall, especially if you’re outside. You want to look like you belong in the environment rather than that you were just plopped from Macy’s young professional section.

Try coordinating engagement session outfits; don’t match

Matching white shirts and blue jeans are very early 2000s, so we can keep up with the trends easily by coordinating outfits. Think neutrals, earth tones, etc.
